Prior to the introduction of the corporate logo branding and ident, the BBC Sport name featured in trail animations for sports programmes.
September 1988 saw the first BBC Sport ident, introduced for the Seoul Olympics. Three versions of the soundtrack were produced, each in a different key.
In this first version of the animation, the globe spun in the wrong direction.
The ident was revised in June 1989 for the globe to spin in the correct direction.
A new set of idents were introduced in July 1992, bringing the BBC Sport globe up to date in time for the Barcelona Olympics.

Coinciding with the BBC’s coverage of Euro 96 in June, the ident was again updated, featuring a new BBC Sport logo.

The change of BBC corporate logo meant an overhaul of the branding in October 1997, though the familiar globe remained.
Two versions of the ident were produced to open and close programmes respectively.
1999 saw the globe motif retired; a new set of fast-paced idents emphasised movement and action, with versions representing particular sports.
